I was a programmer for over 30 years creating custom applications with SQL backend and websites – from scratch typing every line of code. Of course, creating plenty of subroutines to help save some effort. I wanted to try something that I could spend time on content instead of writing code and fixing bugs. But what you run into is someone else’s idea of how things should work, where they should be located or if features should even exist.
This is my first experience with WordPress which appears to be WordPress.org. If it’s not confusing enough to try something new there are two WordPress: .org and .com. Right away I had issues. The menu completely disappeared which I had to recreate. Actually I’ve had to recreate a lot things. Then one day all of the formatting was missing. I’d make changes, the website looked fine, next day no formatting. You try different themes only to run into a road block, something that won’t do what you want or some crazy way to do it. While there is plenty of information available, it’s someone’s interpretation and limited experience as well.
Not trying to be all negative, but it is frustrating. Computers have been developing for over 40 years but we haven’t really progressed much for such a long time, especially on the frontend of things. There is no consistency. And worst of all, don’t you get tired of rebooting? I hope electric cars don’t start requiring that every 10 miles!
WordPress is like Linux, open source code that is generally “free”. But as with all things free (which they don’t turn out to be) you tend to have more to deal with. I’m still progressing along but if you see something weird I hope you understand why…
